Battery

3.5 Almost Great

The battery life is solid. You’ll get up to 10 hours of playtime on a full charge which is good enough for most users. In our test, we played it for the whole capacity of the battery and it took a long time, more than 10 hours but this is probably because we played it at about half the volume. Update: The lithium-ion battery seems to hold strong after more than 4 months of everyday use, the battery life hasn’t diminished.

When it’s fully charged you can easily get 10 hours out of it, especially if you don’t listen at full volume. Now if you intend to blast max volume at all times, battery playtime probably goes down, so keep that in mind.

Charging can be done via the 15V DC power adapter or Micro-USB cable or via the USB port on the back if you have the cable. Having all 3 options is very flexible and comes in handy.

The 3 led indicators tell you how much battery is left. The 3 LED lights show empty, half and full battery as well as the charging indicator. It’s a simple yet effective way to know how much battery is left.

Durability

Even though VAVA Voom 21 speaker doesn’t cost as much as Bose or some other more premium brands it has a very premium feel.

The speaker has some heft. It’s a bit heavier which inspires confidence and also sticks to the surface you put it on. The rubbery bottom also helps with preventing an accident.

Overall, this is a very well built and designed Bluetooth speaker but isn’t suitable for outdoor use since it’s not made for it.

As long as you intend to keep it inside or under a roof, you can feel comfortable with the durability. It’s not meant to be a portable Bluetooth speaker for outdoors, but mostly for inside.

Features

Like all Bluetooth speakers, it comes with, Bluetooth of course. It has the standard range of about 33ft (10m) and works as intended.

For easy connection, you have the option of NFC if your music device supports it which makes it even easier to connect.

You can use it in wired mode by connecting it with 3.5mm audio cable. This is a simple way to save on battery if you don’t have access to electricity.

You can answer calls with the button on top, though we had a bit of difficulty getting our voices through clearly. You have to talk very close to the speaker to get the other person to understand you well. This is probably the only fault of this speaker.

Weak microphone reception isn’t such a big problem since you’re always going to have your smartphone with you so you can just pick it up and talk.

aptX audio support makes the sound quality slightly better which is nice but keep in mind you still need a quality source to hear any difference.

You can connect up to 2 devices at the same time if you have more smartphones or tablets, laptops, etc.

Another cool feature is the power-bank option. You can use your Voom 21 Bluetooth speaker as a portable power-bank. You can charge your phone or tablet from the battery capacity of the speaker. Since it has a USB port you can use regular USB to Micro-USB cable to do that.

Sound

Sound quality is surprisingly good. For the box of this size, we didn’t expect such good audio.

Of course, it can’t really compare to high-end headphones but compared to other Bluetooth speakers Voom 21 does well.

It can get quite loud and for normal listening, you’ll be using ½ or ¾ of max volume. The bass isn’t bad either.

The speaker has a dedicated subwoofer which can add some bass to the music though don’t expect a bass-box experience. It gives it a nice bump, just right to make music more fun.

It’s fun to listen to and has 3 preset EQ levels. There’s no info on how they’re set but it seems there’s one: treble emphasized, bass emphasized, and a somewhat balanced EQ.

You can change the equalizing by pressing the “EQ button” on top. The sound change is noticeable but ultimately comes to the personal preference for which one is better.

aptX support is a nice feature like mentioned before, but since the sound quality of Bluetooth speakers isn’t on the same level as headphones the improvement isn’t as noticeable.

Overall, you’re getting above-average audio quality for an affordable price, packed in a sleek and stylish package with nice features and accessories. A great buy for you if you want to get the best bang for your buck in a Bluetooth speaker.
